Is It Time for a New Heat Pump?

ductless-blowerYour heat pump system is built to provide you with reliable home comfort all year long. With that said, it can feel like a pretty big betrayal when this system stops doing its job. It can happen slowly, with some increasingly concerning noises and slow reduction in cooling power, or it can happen suddenly when your heat pump just stops responding. However it occurs, a heat pump that has stopped operating is one that likely needs to be replaced.

Heat pumps in Charlottesville, VA are necessary for keeping a home liveable so that if you need to upgrade your system, you don’t want to wait. If at all possible, you probably want to get a fair warning before your system goes kaput. We have some tips on how to tell it may be time for a heat pump replacement so you don’t have to sweat your summer away.

What Are the Warnings Signs of a Failing Heat Pump?

There are several different ways that you can tell your heat pump may be due to retire. Make sure to watch out for these indicators so you aren’t stuck without a cooling system in the middle of a heatwave.

  • Your heat pump is getting old. Most HVAC systems can last from 10 to 15 years. If your heat pump is well-maintained it should be able to hit that 15-year mark. With that said though, if your system is between 12 to 15 years old, you should start planning for a replacement in the not-too-far-off future.
  • Repairs are frequent and increasingly expensive. Even well-cared for heat pumps will need repairs every once in a while, but if those repairs have become just as regular as your maintenance checks, you have a problem on your hands. Needing frequent repairs isn’t normal. Along with this, repairs with big price tags aren’t always normal either. A good rule of thumb to remember is that if the cost of a repair will be equal to half or more of the price of a new system, it is better to just opt for the replacement.
  • Your energy bill is only getting higher. Your energy bill should reflect your use of your heat pump and other electrical systems in your home. If you start to notice big spikes in your bills that aren’t normal and are only getting worse whenever you use your heat pump, it is likely that it needs to be replaced sooner than later.
  • Your heat pump can’t do its job anymore. Was your system struggling to keep you warm during winter and now it can’t seem to cool things off either? If your heat pump doesn’t seem to be up to the task anymore, you are better off installing a new unit rather than keeping a system that is becoming the equivalent of an expensive fan.

When you need to replace your heat pump system, make sure you contact the professional technicians on our team to ensure the job gets done right.
