Problems From a Dirty Air Conditioner

dirty-old-acWhen it comes to cleaning around your home, the things you usually think about are dusting the furniture and vacuuming the floors. But do you ever think about cleaning your Troy, VA, HVAC system? If not, don’t worry, most people don’t! Keeping your system clean, though it may seem odd, is going to make a big difference for your comfort and your monthly bills.

If you didn’t know that your air conditioning system can get dirty or that built-up debris can cause problems, it is a good idea to learn a bit more now. This is especially important when you start noticing issues with a dirty evaporator coil.

How Dirt Can Impact Your Home Comfort

First and foremost, excessive levels of dirt in your home can reduce your indoor air quality. This is going to compound over time of course, beyond making you sneeze more often. High levels of dust and dirt are going to start hindering the cooling process of your air conditioner in one way or another over time, which can be especially problematic for the evaporator coil.

Wait … My Evaporator Coil Can Get Dirty?

The short answer is that, yes your evaporator coil has the ability to get dirty. Over time, dirt can get into your air conditioner and start collecting on the coil. This may not seem all that dangerous at first, but even a light layer of dust on this coil can start to hinder the transfer of heat from the air in your home and into your system’s refrigerant. This is going to make it harder for your AC to cool things off, meaning it will have to work harder. And, as you may have guessed, the dirtier your coil gets, the worse this issue will get.

The Consequences of a Dirty Coil

As your evaporator coil gets dirtier and dirtier, it will continue to worsen the cooling process of your AC unit. This is also going to take a toll on the wellbeing of your system too. For example, if the dirt on your coil gets to be too much, the coil may also start to develop a layer of ice. This is seriously dangerous for your AC system and can lead to an early replacement if it isn’t caught soon enough.

Keeping Your Coil Clean

So, if your system getting dirty is such a big problem, then how are you supposed to keep it clean? There are a few tips to help reduce the chances of your evaporator getting too dirty. First and foremost, changing the air filter is your best line of defense. Your air filter is responsible for capturing dust from the air and keeping it out of your AC system. You should change your filter every one to three months depending on your system use to ensure that debris stays out of the AC system’s inner workings.

Aside from this, when you notice that the evaporator coil is getting dirty, you should reach out for help from a professional.
