Efficient AC Operation Tips

serviceThe heat of summer gives everyone a run for their money when it comes to keeping cool. Here’s the thing though: you don’t want to use an AC system that eats up your entire budget.

The heat and humidity in our area require the use of a reliable air conditioner. But how can you use your system if it is costing you too much money? Well, it may be time to see if there are any habits that you might want to change up that will help improve your system efficiency.

Here are some tips to help you enjoy an effective and efficient air conditioner in Charlottesville.

7 Tips To Run Your Air Conditioner More Efficiently

Use these best practices to keep your air conditioner running as efficiently and reliably as possible.

1. Make sure that your vents/ air handlers are clean, open, and unobstructed.

It sounds so simple but it is something people often forget! Make sure to wipe down your vents to remove any dust build-up that is clogged up the vents or covering an air handler. You should also make sure that your vents are all fully open and unobstructed, meaning there is no decor or furniture is in front of them.

2. Check and change your HVAC system air filter on a regular basis

You should check your system air filter regularly to see how dirty it is. In general, you need to change your air filter every one to three months. Keeping the filter clean is highly important to ensuring steady, strong airflow into your AC unit which is required for cool air to be created.

3. Keep doors and windows closed!

Feeling a bit dried out or stuffy? Don’t open the doors or windows to your home. Take a step outside if you must and then return to your nice cool house, rather than letting the cool air escape. This reduces the level of work your system has to do.

4. Cover any south-facing windows or glass doors.

Keeping the worst of the radiant heat out of your home by keeping blinds or curtains covering south-facing windows helps keep your home cooler. This makes it easier on your AC and helps it use less energy to keep the temperature indoor normal.

5. Use those fans to feel cooler

Run standing or ceiling fans to help yourself feel cooler. This helps by increasing sweat evaporation. When you feel cooler it makes it that much easier to increase the temperature on your thermostat, too.

6. Increase the temperature on your thermostat.

We aren’t advocating for leaving your home uncomfortably hot. It is good to remember though that you can have your AC set to 78° and that temperature will feel comfortable while also keeping your energy use low. Make sure never to set your thermostat more than 20° less than the outside temperature.

7. Get maintenance or repairs from a professional technician.

One of the best ways to ensure that your system works efficiently and effectively is to make sure that you schedule vital services with a professional technician. Our team is here to help with your maintenance or repairs when you need them!
